The beauty of St. Croix is best seen on a kayak tour offered by Caribbean Adventure Tours (tel. 800/532-3483 or 340/778-1522; www.stcroixkayak.com). You'll use stable sit-on-top sea kayaks to traverse the tranquil waters of Salt River and enjoy the park's ecology and wildlife, including secluded estuaries and mangrove groves. This is not necessarily an adventure for the rugged Olympic athlete but is ideal for beginners, as the helpful staff is exceedingly patient and solicitous of your well-being. The highlights of the trip are snorkeling near a pristine beach and paddling to where Columbus and his crew came ashore some 500 years ago. The tour, lasting 3 hours, costs $45 per person.
